Every time I go home, I’m reminded how incredibly lucky I am to have grown up in Hilton Head Island. I haven’t lived in Hilton Head since I headed to Austin for college, but I vividly recall summers on summers of beaching, boating, and everything in between.
Our conditioning for sports was on the soft sand of the beach (ouch), our football field was surrounded by picturesque lagoons with alligators basking in the sun, and our Christmas breaks more often than not meant beach days in December.
Although Christmas break doesn’t exist for us grown-ups (don’t worry, once I take over the world, that is high on the list of changes to be made), most of the island kids head home for the week of Christmas.
We must have been very high up on Santa’s Nice List, because we got EXTRA lucky this year… every day was in the high 70’s to low 80’s, aka perfect. So we made the only reasonable decision and headed to the beach.
Christmas Day was uncharacteristically foggy, but Santa Bella brightened up the day with a nice long walk on the beach in last night’s outfit.
The next day, the fog cleared and we were left with the most perfect beach day including, but not limited to frisbee, spike ball, beer, and swimming with dolphins (the usual).
^ Dolphins sometimes “corral” hunt, or trap the fish near the shore and then catapult backwards so they don’t get stuck. It felt like we were in a much cooler, ethical dolphin show at Sea World.
^ Weird looking dolphin.
Have an awesome, awesome long weekend! We’re headed to the Hamptons, but I can’t wait to share the rest of the photos from home, New Year’s Eve in Mexico City, and CUBA next week.
